Faye was an absolute dream to work with, especially as someone who usually hates being photographed. She made the whole experience feel so relaxed and natural, and it genuinely felt like I was spending time with a friend rather than a vendor I’d only just met ~ All of our guests have commented on how lovely, friendly, and talented Faye was.
grace + ethan travelled from texas to north yorkshire to celebrate their wedding at middleton lodge
A two day wedding which started at the gin terrace, with hand made gift bags for guests and portraits around the estate. I always suggest 2-3 hours for pre wedding coverage, and starting it around an hour before guests are due to arrive. This it to document you getting ready casually, before heading out for portraits before most guests are on site. It means you get a little practice before the main day, you get to celebrate your outfit (!) and also get some sneak peeks before the wedding so you know what to expect from your wedding day photos. I always make effort to deliver these images by the morning of the wedding as they are a big confidence boost and re-assure couples that the wedding photographs will be relaxed.
Grace and ethan opted against a wedding party, instead choosing to do a first look and spend time together.
I love that more couples are ignoring tradition and adapting the day to suit them. Grace in particular knew that she wanted to spend the morning with her family as her dad lives abroad and one of her brothers lives in New York. The morning was so relaxed and perfect for them. At Middleton you usually get ready elsewhere and head over to the wedding suite at midday, so often I'll head there first to document your details before you arrive.
for the first look
we'll liaise on locations with you, always dictated by privacy and the light. first looks should feel effortless, and my approach as the photographer is to establish the logistics, but then take a step back, shooting as far away as possible without interruptions and allowing the moments to breathe.
would you believe we almost had to move inside?
It was forecast heavy rain for the duration of the ceremony but we were so lucky and managed to have the ceremony outdoors. If anything, it was so sunny (!) which is always quite difficult to photograph ~ but sunny colours always look beautiful on 35mm analogue, so I found myself shooting considerably more film than digital throughout the ceremony, and using flash for the portraits to balance out the shadows. For all other elements of the day, it's much easier to position myself in the best spot for the best, flattering light ~ but ceremonies are restrictive. Especially when you're working with videographers, tripods, and other team members. This is why I work in teams, to ensure all angles are covered without compromising the video you've invested in.
AFTER THE CEREMONY, IT WAS TIME FOR THE COCKTAIL HOUR & FAMILY PORTRAITS.
I'll always encourage couples to be present, enjoy their cocktail hour and around 20-30 minutes in I'll start gathering family and friends for the photos. The energy during the cocktail hour is mega, everyone is so excited to see you and it's one of the best times of the day for candids. (it's not my favourite though, that's the second cocktail hour after dinner - keep scrolling to see how much nicer the light is then)
for family photos
I'll have spoken to you before the day about your family dynamics, whether anyone within the group photos have additional needs to consider to keep everyone comfortable, and also I'll talk to you about how long you want to dedicate to these photographs. This will determine whether we do individuals or bigger groups to save time. It's always best to do family photos away from the main group of guests so that everyone feels comfortable, but this isn't always possible ~ especially with guests with mobility issues or other additional needs, but we'll have chatted about this in advance and my main priority during this section of the day is being inclusive and helping everyone to relax.
I USUALLY DO TWO OR THREE SHORT COUPLES PORTRAITS SESSIONS THROUGHOUT THE DAY
This is in collaboration with you and you're in control the whole time. Most of my couples want informal portraits at convenient times to minimise time away from guests ~ and this is my speciality. On this day, the light was so so bright, so I suggested tagging images onto their first look of the wedding breakfast room. These portraits all happened in less than 5 minutes. I then got candids as they headed to the room to freshen up and guests started to take their seats.
WHEN YOU GET YOUR GALLERY
I'll have organised it into sections for ease when looking for specific photos, but in reality I am chasing light all day and actually document each individual part of your design and styling throughout.
if you're doing speeches before dinner
A champagne tower is a lovely way to make it more interactive. I loved how Grace and Ethan dished out the champers to their wedding party making sure they felt extra special for this part of the day. For the speeches, my approach is to be as unobtrusive and I love the fig house because I can easily get around using the doors. For this one, there was an additional consideration because they had an incredible videographer! so angles wise I was more restricted, but in this case it's all about lens choice to be able to shoot people from further away without impacting the video.
the next section is my fave part of the day
The light is magic, everyone's relaxed after dinner and the formalities are almost done. There's always a really joyous energy shift after dinner, and it's so fun to shoot. Depending on the time of the year and when the sun sets, couples will also wanna get extra portraits. In this case, we just had a quick walk around the gardens. I estimate we were shooting for 5 minutes if not less. The bulk of these photos are unorchestrated interactions (my fave).
cake + party
Every wedding I get to photograph is so different from the last ~ especially when it comes to the party (!) this is one of my favourite bits of the day, especially when the couple love to dance. My approach is to mix ambient light photography with flash, again, to minimise intrusion. I also love creating content during this part of the day.
thank you so much for being here
You can see lots more of my work at this venue below (it's my most booked venue) ~ and get in touch to discuss working together, here.
